You will notice four things when the families of your students set high expectations and work on learning activities at home:
A national survey found only 22% of parents "can name a basic milestone that their child should have learned in school over the previous year." (1) Can we expect parents to set high expectations and work on learning at home when 78% of families are unaware of what their child is learning at school?
Teachers tell us they don't have the time or training to fully support their student's families. Parents agree. Another national parent survey found that 59% of parents report they have never received a phone call from school about their child, and 43% of families have never received an email about their child (2). Family Five will help your school improve parent-teacher communications and show families how they can set high expectations and work on learning activities at home. What Family Five is and how it works:
Family Five is a series of 90 parent learning videos, printable resources, outreach support and teacher support materials designed to show families how to create a home learning environment. Parents sign up and receive messages like this from Family Five:
"Hi families! A little confused about 'compare and contrast?' Watch reading video #15 at www.famfive.com to learn what it is and how you can help at home." Parents watch a video in about 5 minutes to learn:
1. What their child is expected to do at school 2. Why these skills and concepts are important 3. Simple and fun home learning activities they can use immediately Parents get actionable information they can use that evening. Messages come to the parent via monthly emails and twice per month text messages. Optional teacher support materials show motivated teachers how to improve their family outreach: "Hi Mrs. Baker! Last year Joe learned about place value and something we call 'making a ten.' I notice he needs a little review. I'll work on it at school!
